Home Goods Boca Raton
The 31-year-old entrepreneur, for example, created products such as noise-isolating earphones shaped like ice cream sundaes or pink cupcakes.
And after succeeding with ear budgets, headphones and phone cases, his Boca Raton company — named after himself, Ankit — is expanding into home goods. His company is creating wall canvases, pillows and throws, from blue floral ones to those with gold geometric designs.
Sales have jumped from $25, 000 when he started out in 2010 to $1.3 million. His products are now in 8, 000 stores worldwide and are sold online at Amazon.com. His floral noise-isolating headphones are being featured in this month's issue of Teen Vogue magazine.
Janis is succeeding so well that he was just named Entrepreneur of the Year by the South Palm Beach chapter of SCORE.
Jain is a hard-working business owner who finds talent to create popular products — and then finds markets to sell them, said South Palm Beach SCORE Chairman Hal Finkelstein. "He's a brilliant marketer, " Finkelstein said.
Just as important, he is willing to travel to find new customers, said Herb Douglas, a retired chief executive officer and SCORE volunteer who has mentored Jain.
Jain has flown to China, London, Paris, Geneva and Berlin in the past year. Then there's the travel inside the United States that buys 90 percent of Jain's products.
"He thinks nothing of going to a Las Vegas consumer electronics show, working all day and then flying home, " Douglas said. "He's totally driven. He works day and night."
But Jain said all his efforts don't seem like, well, work. "It's fun to run a global company, " Jain said.
He likes traveling and meeting people. The Chinese, for example, he finds "amazing, hard-working people." Jain recently spent a month there to learn more about the country where he uses factories to make some of his company's merchandise. Plus, he said wants to sell to the growing middle class there.
He's also plans to go to Russia soon to find new markets.
Jain said growing up in India with a father who was a retail and energy entrepreneur helped him learn how to run a business. "He's amazing — I've only achieved 2 percent of what he has, " Jain said.
His father wanted him to have a quality education so at 17 Jain came to the United States. He earned a bachelor's degree and then a master's in computer science at Florida Atlantic University.
But retail lured Jain into starting his own business here. His success has helped launch careers of other South Floridians.
Annamaria de Govia is only 23 and a recent graduate of the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale, but she has been leading his design of home goods and accessories.
